Saturday night I heard this song for the first time. I do know why I have not heard it. I don’t listen to the radio much. The one in my head plays all the time. That is another article for sure. When I do I don’t listen to commercial stations usually Air1 (88.1) or His Radio (91.9). So, with that said I heard this for the first time. The presentation was a parody of sorts but the lyrics of the chorus are something. I am still trying to figure that out (what they are that is).
The song by Bruno Mars is titled Grenade. The chorus is as follows:
I’d catch a grenade for ya (yeah, yeah, yeah)
Throw my hand on a blade for ya (yeah, yeah, yeah)
I’d jump in front of a train for ya (yeah, yeah, yeah)
You know I'd do anything for ya (yeah, yeah, yeah)
Oh, oh
I would go through all this pain,
Take a bullet straight through my brain,
Yes, I would die for ya baby;
But you won't do the same
Honestly by the second chorus I was laughing at the words. This is my opinion and mine alone how stupid! Kick her/him to the curb. Who needs a love like that? But really, who would do any of those things? Oh yeah, it is romantic but really? I know I am rambling, but you know how bad seafood hangs in there way to long after you have eaten it? So has this chorus hung in my brain. I just can’t get rid of it. Then it hit me upside of my head. Jesus could sing this.
Yep, I said Jesus could sing this maybe like this.
I’d catch a cat of nine tails for ya (yeah, yeah, yeah)
Open my hands take a nail for ya (yeah, yeah, yeah)
I’d jump on a cross for ya (yeah, yeah, yeah)
You know I'd do anything for ya (yeah, yeah, yeah)
Oh, oh
I would go through all this pain,
Take a spear just the same,
Yes, I would die for ya baby;
But you won't do the same
I could add: And it condemns me the same.
I am reading in Romans Chapters 12-15. Paul very clearly speaks of what Christ’s love looks like. Following Valentine’s Day love does not look like that. I mean really. Catch a grenade for someone we love? Most of the time we won’t give them the time of day. Heaven help us if they said something bad about us or whatever. Catch a grenade, jump on a cross not in this world. Praise be to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, He would and did for ya. He loved like heaven loves that “while I was yet a sinner Christ died for me,” when I wouldn’t do the same the lyric goes!
I/we need more grace.
More grace to spread around to apply to all I come in contact with daily. Maybe to learn to love like Jesus.
I wrote this earlier today, “Love of neighbor is not based on their behavior but on our Savior.”
Yep it rhymes.
Maybe Bruno Mars could use that!

Priorities Make Love Visible...
At Valentine’s Day we think of love and its expression. Usually with a meal, flowers, candy and romantic atmosphere we express our love and devotion. Is that all it is?
I have spent some time this week looking for songs with the word love in the chorus. Thursday I posted a status asking for input from my Facebook friends. As of Friday I have 32 comments with titles. I didn’t know I could get that kind of response! Is a song an adequate expression of love? Words are just words without action. Action they say (I want to be quoted as a “they” someday) speaks louder than words. Actions also reveal what we consider important.
Those important things in our live receive priority. We spend time thinking about them, contemplating their value to us and for us. We consider ways to express our gratitude and how to spend time with them if our priorities are people. In my Life Group we are looking at the vows a couple makes when getting married what they mean and how we live them out.
This week comes our priority in relationships. Who is number one? Who should be? For a follower of Jesus God is number one, first priority then spouse number two, then children etc. That’s an easy answer right from the book. Now for a harder one, consider what you spent the most time thinking about or doing last week. Consider that what we spend the most time thinking about and doing is our primary priority, then what is number 1 in your life? I would guess that like me you are off the page now not even in the same book. Because God has not been your number one priority according to how you spent your time last week. Am I right? I do hope not. What about your love? Your spouse how did they rank by your actions 1, 2, 8, 10 somewhere lower? Don’t fret it is easy to get priorities out of order.
Valentine’s Day is a great day to consider what you love and to recommit to loving in God’s order, God first, spouse second family next. Love is nothing if it has no action. Take a post-it and write three action steps that will be expressions of your love to those in top priority. For God it may be a set time of prayer, scripture and meditation period. No e-mail, paper, of TV before, making your first thoughts about your chief love. For your spouse, maybe you will think of three great things about them each day and share one of them with your spouse, for your children, a hug once a day along with a smile.
Expressions of love are best when they are simple and spontaneous but that means they must be a priority relationships you consider important and worth thinking about daily and not just once a year. Oh and guys chocolate never hurts but washing the dishes once in a while does even better.
Love out loud for the rest of the year.
It WILL make a difference.
