We are so fickle. In the middle of one season
we can’t wait for the next. Here in Southeast Georgia it takes a while for fall
to hit. I don’t think hit is the right word as there is not a lot of color,
maybe wave is a better word. There is a coolness in the air today (Friday) so
maybe we can go to a football game without sweating (maybe not). Time and the
weather will tell. Weather forecasting is not an exact science. There is still
so much we do not understand and are unable to predict with reliability.
Take
hurricane predictions for instance, the short term 1-3 days is much better than
even 10 years ago but the longer term it is still a best guess. One thing we
can be certain of is the unpredictability of a hurricane. It WILL do something
unexpected. That is true of life as well. About the time we think we have it
figured out here comes a cure ball and a swing and a miss. Then the sinker and
another swing and a miss. It is after all October and time for baseball
playoffs.
To
watch the chaos in the news is to become disturbed and prompts us to action yet
what to do? Honestly, we want to do to them what they are doing to us. That is
to react. That is to let them and their actions have control over us and our
actions. We have been bought and paid for at a very high price. Jesus completed
the task at the cross. If he is Lord of our lives then he has control. Not just
of the universe but our actions as well. Jesus says these words.
“To you who are ready
for the truth, I say this: Love your enemies. Let them bring out the best in
you, not the worst. When someone gives you a hard time, respond with the
energies of prayer for that person. If someone slaps you in the face, stand
there and take it. If someone grabs your shirt, giftwrap your best coat and
make a present of it. If someone takes unfair advantage of you, use the
occasion to practice the servant life. No more tit-for-tat stuff. Live
generously. Luke 6:27-30 The Message
The question is who are you looking to as
God? Are you god doing what you think is right and best? If that is the case,
then you will not respond to evil like Jesus demands. But if Jesus is God for
you then you will respond because you know there is a bigger work here than
your particular circumstance or emotional response. It’s your choice.
Fall is a great time to look at who/what
is God for you. If this world is your God all bets are off. If God is your God
then whatever is happening good or bad in life is for His glory and your good.
The change of seasons are regular and predictable but the movement and methods
of God not so much. That’s why Jesus asks us to follow him. It requires trust
and a commitment to his leadership.
