It's taking Shape!

In two days we went from partial flat roof to a gable roof with trusses set and half of the decking attached. That was a lot of work out of a lot of people. We are grateful to more than space would allow for me to mention in so many ways helping us with this project. It is hard to believe all the work done in just two short days until I think about all of the work that is yet to be done. A building is not a church.

The church is those who have agreed to cooperate together in common for Christ and his mission. As I say and have written, a building is a tool for the church to use. It so often is taken as “The Church” but it is a tool of the church. It is a place for the church to gather in a meal, worship, death, marriage building or propping up one another. I need to tell you about Crossroads Church.

The church has supported 30 families through Guyton Elementary by suppling personal care items as a part of their backpack program. Weekly (Guyton Elementary) distributes food stuffs to children for the weekend. We add to that with a bag we call blessing bags (30) filled with comb, tooth brush, shampoo, soap, tooth paste etc. We have been doing this on a bi-monthly basis for two years. A new opportunity this year sponsored by our children to collect scarves, hats and gloves for the homeless has been fulfilled with 27 scarves, 6 pairs of gloves and 11 hats going to the Old Savannah City Mission. The second opportunity are purses. These purses are filled with women’s personal care items from women to women in need. I don’t know how many there are (now over 20) but I am sure but the pile is growing. Annually we have an angel tree for children and families who need a little help at Christmas. Last year we helped 13 children with shirts, shoes, pants socks, underwear and toys. The church is alive and well and giving to its community. I remind you all of this done without a building. A building is a blessing but not a church. It’s confusing.

Confusion, we do that. We take simple things and make them complex and therefore confusing. Take Christmas for instance, concerts, meals, parties for every organization, decorations that have to be perfect all make the simple manger so much more complex than it was or is. We do that so effortlessly and then wonder why we are worn out when Christmas actually gets here! Now that’s crazy complex. Here is an idea to be simpler. Sit down with your favorite seasonal beverage (hot chocolate, spiced tea or a favorite coffee) a turn off the room lights and turn on the Christmas lights, carols on your personal electronic device and maybe a fire in the fireplace (leave the AC on as needed) and sit “be still and know that I am God.” It’s Christmas. Simple isn’t it?
